The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
