Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
